While in Great House, the lost object which comes into the lives of several characters is a huge writing desk which is believed to have belonged to the Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca, in The History of Love, Nicole Krauss' second novel, it is a lost manuscript which was smuggled out of Poland during the Second World War before resurfacing 60 years later after many peregrinations and translations. The author, the aged and worn out Leon Gursky, is dying in a New York garret, but his manuscript will survive him and continue to change many of those who happen to read it. |
